Dog Scoop bag's - It would appear we have several members not removing their poo bags after training, if you have gone to the trouble to pick up after your dog, then go the distance and remove the bag afterwards also. Thank you.
Please ensure, to avoid disappointment, that you check in on this page regularly. Due to the recent weather conditions we may have to change venue's from time to time due to water logging etc. When its dry it isn't a problem, but when we have the torrential down pours as we have recently it becomes a Safety issue. Thank you for your cooperation.
Well Done to everyone who attended and assisted in the recent Gundog Demonstration in Ormskirk Primary. On the back of this demonstration I have now been approached to carry out a furth demonstration at a School in Warrington, date to be confirmed in July 2009. Also a Gundog Demonstration has been requested in September 2009 at Rufford Animal Sanctuary, any members wishing to be involved should contact Nick for further details.

According to the programme we are on 1st from 1pm, then again at 3pm. If any member needs to be away from the event earlier than 4pm then I would advise parking off site and walking into the school grounds.
No Training on Sunday 28th June 2009 for A/V Groups - We will be holding a Puppy/Novice only session on this day, but no advanced A/V HPR, Spaniel or Retriever session on the day. Normal arrangements will resume on Sunday 31st May from 10am.
Evening Training - For the benefit of ALL and especially the evening groups we will endeavour to move from place to place with our training. West Lancs Gundogs have secured several training grounds now, for the benefit of using a different location for training as often as possible. Currently we are training at Platts Lane Ormskirk, which gives us the opportunity of water, ground game and cover. Please keep an eye on this page for updates on changes to scheduled training venues.
Due to the time of year (nesting season) training at Causeway Lane is cancelled until further notice. All training will be at Moss Lane Burscough. Session times are as normal.

Currently we do not have an evening class for HPR's, this is due to member availability, if the numbers of HPR owner's at West Lancs Gundogs was to increase then we would gladly run an additional Wednesday evening session for A/V HPR's, but at the moment it is not viable to do so.
Results for The West Lancs Challenge Cup: Any Variety Gundog Working Test
1st - Tony Sloyan with (B) Emygan Lotus (Labrador Retriever) 2nd - John Farrell with (B) Milly (Labrador Retriever) 3rd - Debbie Smith with (B) Hytymes Belle at Blackdown (Flatcoat Retriever)
The day started with fine drizzle and a slight breeze, this soon passed us by and developed into a nice day, although the sun came out on several occasions the wind disappeared too. The 1st Test of the day was exactly that, a Test as not every dog out of the 12 who ran was able to find and pick thier marked retrieve.
The 2nd Test was a straight forward blind, out and back instruction, made to look so easy by the Retrievers, had some Spaniels wishing they had stayed at home.
The 3rd was a welcome break, a marked retrieve from water, every dog succeeded in retrieving the dummy on this Test, plus it broke the day as we had decided to take Elevenses at this point. However the threat of more rain put that idea away very quickly. No sooner had we decided to go through to the end, the sun reappeared.
The 4th Test, again a marked retrieve out of white grass and thistle proved a good one for the Spaniels as they all succeded in finding their dummies, but one or two of the Retrievers thought it a bit difficult, with one refusal and another blinking.
Test 5, a blind up to an old Partridge pen. This was very successful, in fact every dog succeded in finding their dummies.
The final Test was down into a gully through some dense thistle and white grass. Again this was a great sight to see, especially with the Retrievers. A great launch from Kev Haworth (chief Dummy Chucker) put the dummy in the right spot every time for the final 12 retrieves. Afterwards everyone made their way back to the meeting point and vehicles for a well earned drink and sandwich. Giving the Judges time to add the scores to gether. The winner was outright but a run off was required for 2nd & 3rd between Deb Smith & John Farrell.
The run off was through a maize patch, up a slight enbankment and into some bracken at the edge of a wood. Ladies first as ever saw Deb Smith sending her Flatcoat bitch, straight out, but the dog seem to doubt her own nose when she got to the fall, and took, what felt like an age to pick the dummy. Next out was John Farrell's yellow Labrador. On sending her, she flew out like an arrow, straight to the dummy with total disregard for any briars or any other cover and straight back to hand to take 2nd place.
A brief recap from the Judges Karl Walker & Nick Powell and the awards began. The Head Steward Gary Heron and his team Nina Kurzweil and Kevin Haworth where awarded for officiating, then every competitor was awarded a Certificate for taking part in the 1st West Lancs Challenge Cup. Then it was time in reverse order, for the winners to step forward. Debbie Smith gained a 3rd, John Farrell a 2nd and finally Tony Sloyan was awarded 1st place with is Labrador Retriever (B).
Sunday 1st March 2009 - No training today due to the West Lancs Challenge Cup being held at Lathom. We will resume as normal on Sunday 8th Marh 2009 10:00hrs.
ATTEMPTED THEFT OF DOGS - Wednesday 18th February 2009 19:34hrs yes 7.34pm in the Evening!
This attempted theft happened when I was at home with my Wife and family. Please be aware that dog thieves are active in the Ormskirk area. Had it not been for a quick response from myself in giving chase to potential Dog Thieves I would be with-out dogs at this time. Please review your security on a regular basis, infact do what I have done today and task a friend to try and steal your dogs, no holds barred, just to test your systems.

Marked retrieve from water, but the dog will go out of site of the handler at some point 4. Unmarked retrieve in white grass and weed crop 5. Marked retrieve from Maize 6. Unmarked retrieve from white grass and weed crop
Senior Steward for the day will be Gary Heron, who will advise handlers of starting positions and dummy drops etc.
31/01/09 The Final Day - The final day of the season proved a great success for my young dog Boundarymoor Tangled Gorse, he was sent, along with an experienced spaniel into some fallen Maize, to look for a dead Cock Pheasant, which actually turned out to be a strong runner (obviously if I had known this at the time I would not have sent him in) however much to my surprise he returned with the bird and delivered to hand like a seasoned veteran, I was absolutely amazed when several of the guns who were walking back from thier pegs had witnessed the whole episode told me in great detail how he had hunted the ground, found the fall and then ran a line to collect his bird, then they watched him return to me. Later the same day, I allowed him to look for another Cock Pheasant, that I new was dead. Unfortunately this time it had landed in a river, he hunted up and down the bank trying to work out how he would get to it. Eventually I rescued the bird, placed it on the bank and then sent him for it. Again "Big" didnt let me down, straight to the bird and back to hand. I'm obviously very pleased with his progress to date, thankfully the season end has come at the right time, so's not to push him to far at this stage. 30/01/09 Bryn Shoot Knighton Welsh Borders. The A/V Spaniels enjoyed a great day out to end the season, the forecast weather conditions did'nt happen so we seen an abundance of game. The young dogs did extremely well, hunting, flushing and sitting up to both flush and shot. Out of the four dogs running 3 of them where out of Bottlingwood Starlight and her pups look so much like her when hunting. Showing total disregard for any type of cover. The first run seen us hunting along some hedgerow's with a good amount of scent, again all dogs found their own pace along here, plus it switched the handlers on too.
Unfortunately the guns for the day Roger & Tom were unable to see the rabbits quick enough, and although the dogs flushed we had no retrieves. Second run was through a Mustard crop, this was an excellent challenge for both handler and dog, steadiness was the key here, with lots of game scent (we could see where the rabbits had been eating the crop) . But again both gun's seen rabbits but were unable to get a shot off, due to safety. After this we assembled at the edge of an over grown spinney and lined out as to beat it through. The spaniels came into their own in here, one or two ran on a little and had to be handled, but most hunted really well. Some well timed handling and good judgement of cover seen us through to the end. After a short break back at the vehicles for tea and biscuits, we headed off to Nursery wood for some steadiness training, still one or two birds around the pen kept all the handlers on their toes. Dogs sat up to shot and flush, really well. Again at the end the guns, although had several shots still had nothing to show for it.
After lunch we drove to another part of the estate to hunt out some bracken banks and white grass plus a river bank. This was again an excellent piece, holding Rabbit, Woodcock and Pheasant. All the dogs had flushes but again the guns were either in the wrong position or not concentrating. Luckily we had blank firer's to simulate as best we could. The final run was at the highest point, hunting out some beet cover crops, where in the past we have seen a lot of Pheasants. Luckily this time the birds were few and far between at the point, probably due to the cold wind which was now cutting! Again the guns had several shots but to no avail, in all apart from the guns we had and the young dogs had, a most enjoyable day in some of the most stunning countryside you will ever see.
The West Lancs Challenge Cup - 1st March 2009 see events diary for further information.
New Start Times for 11th Jan 2009 Puppy/Novice 10:00 - 11:00 A/V HPR 11:30 - 12:30 A/V Spaniel 12:30 - 13:30 A/V Retriever 13:30 - 14:30 "Specific Issue" 121 Training will be held out side of these sessions.
Bryn Shoot - We have just returned from our training weekend in the Welsh Borders, again a very enjoyable weekend, fantastic Christmas postcard type weather. Most dogs and handlers performed well. We did have one or two hiccups, but that is why we have these weekends away, to put the dogs through the paces to see where they are up to with training needs etc. Over the next few weeks we will be working on certain things with these handlers. See the Gallery page for pictures.
Weekend Training 23/11/08 - It was with regret that the afternoon training at Moss Lane had to be cancelled at such short notice. Due to the weather and several cancellations, it was the only sensible thing to do, as it happens the weather did'nt improve at all for the rest of the day. I still felt guilty though, honest! Well done to those handlers who attended the Puppy/Novice class, an excellent turn out for probably the most miserable weather i've seen for a while when training.
CONGRATULATIONS! go to Gary Heron (who attends our advanced A/V Spaniel group) for achieving a Certificate of Merit with his Dog (Kingcott Mickey) or "Brough" at his 1st Open Cocker Spaniel Stake, organised by West Midlands Field Trial Society and held at the Shavington Estate in Market Drayton, Shropshire on 4th November 2008. Well done Gary, I'm sure you are most pleased with Brough, for a 1st run out.
Last Sunday of the month brought forward - As explained below due to the fact we are away for the last Sunday of the month our next training session 23rd Nov 2008 will be held at Moss Lane for all varieties, (location for Puppy/Novice).
Cancelled Training Session - due to the fact we are away from 27th November to 30th November at the Bryn Shoot, we will not be training this particular weekend but resume as normal on 7th December 2008. The final session of this season will be held on Sunday 21st December 2008, Resuming again in the New Year on 11th January 2009 with new start times for all sessions as below:-
New Start Times for 11th Jan 2009 Puppy/Novice 10:00 - 11:00 A/V HPR 11:30 - 12:30 A/V Spaniel 12:30 - 13:30 A/V Retriever 13:30 - 14:30 "Specific Issue" 121 Training will be held out side of these sessions.
New Services - West Lancs Gundogs are pleased to announce as from early 2009 (date to be confirmed) we can now offer "specific issue training" with all gundog breeds. This will be based on 121 training and will consist of short training sessions on a one to one basis, directed at a specific problem with your dogs training. This may be aggression, none retrieval of dummies, reluctance to give on command and pulling on a lead or recall problems. 121 prices will apply, member rates also apply. Each session will be approx 30-45 mins in length and handlers will be expected to continue any remedial training outside of this session. It is envisaged that the training will be Sundays and occasionally midweek during day-light hours initially, then it will move to evenings once the clocks go forward again.
Due to member feed back, the last Sunday of every month, training will be held at Moss Lane site. This is an area we can train without any distractions, open paddock type training. Excellent for refresher directional training and re-inforcing the sit, stay and recall. Open to all as usual. Obviously if we are training at this location we will not be at Causeway Lane site. We will as a one off train at the Moss Lane site again on Sunday 2/11/08 from 12:30pm. Puppy/Novice class as normal from 11:00am.
Thank you - Deb Smith. Deb has very kindly supplied a Dummy Launching machine for the club to use on a long term basis. Having used this equipment recently for an A/V Gundog training session (and only producing one "No Bird") I think it is an invalauble peice of kit and can only add to the facilities we offer at West Lancs Gundogs. Thanks again Debbie. I just need to figure out how to set it up on my own now and use the remote side of it also.
CONGRATULATIONS! Must go to Jan Gough who has most recently had some great results with "Ditchstone Vincent" or Fred (GWP). In Jans own words, we can now put the R back into Fred's group of HP, as he has successfully been introduced to game and is retrieving beautifully, Well Done Jan for your determination and obvious hard work. Although Fred has never had any retrieving issue's, Jan was a little concerned regarding introducing Fred to game. Alas any concerns Jan had, have now been dismissed as Fred has done well on several retrieves, he just need's to see lot's more game now.
The Bryn Shoot - We have just returned from our latest training weekend at The Bryn Shoot, where we experienced three seasons, Torrential Rain, Cool Winds and Bright Sunshine, but we survived. All handlers and dogs did really well, despite the wet conditions and hopefully have learnt something from the experience. Please see our pictures on the gallery.
WLG Awards Day - Sunday 1st Feb 2009 - On the day we will have various events on, but the day is to recognise those members who have achieved with their dogs either in the field, competetively or in working surroundings. Each category will be recognised e.g. Spaniels, Retrievers and HPR's etc. All proceeds will go towards training events throughout the year. Sunday 14th September 2008 - Please be advised of the proposed group changes for this weekend, due to our recent success in growing numbers it has now been decided to once again split the groups as follows:- 11:00-12:00 Puppy/Novice Class 12:30-13:30 A/V Spaniel Class 13:30-14:30 A/V Retriever Class 14:30-15:30 A/V HPR Class One 2 One will be done outside of these times, either prior to Puppy Class or after 15:30hrs. Puppy/Novice will remain at Moss Lane Burscough ground, all other classes however will be at Causeway Lane Training Grounds.
Puppy/Novice News - Wednesday 30/07/08 Just to confirm we have now moved the training for Puppies and Novice group to Moss Lane Burscough, directions are on the Location page. Plus the start time has changed to 6.30pm Wednesday and 11.00am Sunday. Any problems finding the address please do not hesitate to contact me on 07799 425063.
Training Weekend - All members wishing to attend the early September training weekend need to contact me as soon as possible to confirm your places, obviously those who have contacted me need'nt bother. Places are tight so don't delay.
CONGRATULATIONS! go to Jan Gough (who attends the advanced group) for achieving a 6th place in her 1st Working Test at Rochdale for the HPR's Group. Jan explained that some of the retrieves where very difficult hence only a hand full of dogs achieved double retrieves, none the less very well done Jan & Fred (Ditchstone Vincent) for an excellent run out. Please see Gallery Page for pics. (July 2008) West Lancs Gundogs are on the move! Because of the services we provide and the growing number of members we have decided to move our operation. Due to "word of mouth" and our success in producing excellent dogs for the field, handler's are returning to us for further training with experienced dogs for refresher training, some are bringing new puppies for training too. With this in mind, we believe the time is right to move to our purposely designed area. The final confirmation is only a matter of weeks away so please do return to this page regularly for an update of the situation. The move wont happen over night, plus we intend to publicise it well, so stay in touch by re-visiting our site at least once a week.
CONGRATULATIONS again! go to Debbie Smith (who attends the advanced group) for achieving a 2nd place in a recent Scurry held at the Cheshire County Show. Please see the gallery page for pics of Deb & Saffi receiving her awards. Well done Deb's, hope the rosette's are up for everyone to see.
Knowsley Park - West Lancs Gundogs enjoyed a great day out at Knowsley Park Merseyside for the Countryside Foundation Education Day, to assist in educating Inner City school children in the role of various gundog breeds used in the field. Please see gallery for picture's. The children, approx 300, thoroughly enjoyed themselves, so too the Handlers from West Lancs Gundogs. BASC attended and provided a hot kitchen for the event and kindly supplied all with Venison sausages and it was very much enjoyed by all.
CONGRATULATIONS! go to Debbie Smith (who attends the advanced group) for achieving a 3rd place in a recent Scurry held at the Flatcoated Retriever Meeting. Please see the gallery page for pics of Saffi in her 3rd place run. Well done Deb's, don't drink all the "Shampoo" on your own.
(June 2008) Rabbit Pen Training - Can I remind all members wishing to utilise the rabbit pen, may do so from next month (June) this is open to members only, on alternate weekends until the start of the shooting season. This is not a first come first serve basis, but I need to block book to secure the pen. Any members wishing to use the pen should contact Nick on 07799 425063 to arrange availability.
(May 2008) I would like to thank everyone who has managed the timed slots I allocated via letter, I am sure everyone will agree the groups are much more manageable now. I enjoyed spending the time to assess each dog and every handler and look forward to our next session. (March 2008) As a temp measure, until the lighter nights arrive, West Lancs Gundogs will be training on Tuesday evenings from 17.15hrs, initially to carry out Assessments but for members to train also. Any members wishing to take part should contact Nick prior to attending.
(February 2008) The shooting season is now over and you are wondering what you will be doing at weekends and in the evenings throughout the summer months. West Lancs Gundogs will be training in the evenings (twice infact, depending on the natural light) and every weekend as normal from March 2008. We will do our best to keep you busy, training your dog or even training other peoples dogs. So why not make West Lancs Gundogs an integral part of your closed season activities.
(January 2008) West Lancs Gundogs have an opportunity, prior to the 08/09 shooting season starting, to train in some of the most sought after training grounds.
