West Lancs Gundogs have been asked to carry out a Gundog Demonstration for Rufford Animal Sanctuary 6th September 2009, details will follow shortly and as normal any members wishing to be involved should contact Nick for more information. Please support the Sanctuary and West Lancs Gundogs by attending, its a great day out, with fun packed things to do.
20th June 2009 - West Lancs Gundog Demonstration. We will be holding our first Gundog Demonstration of the Summer Season, to be held at Ormskirk C.E. Primary School Greetby Hill Ormskirk Lancashire L39 2DP. I have now received plenty of volunteers for the event who will be receiving, via email, the full programme shortly. The event starts at 12.30 Noon, if you can come along and support fellow members, then please do. (See Gallery page for pictures of the day)
1 Day - Training Event , Saturday 27th June 2009, Prestiegene Welsh Borders. This event is open to Members only and inparticular Spaniels and Retrievers, no pups allowed on this trip only dogs of a certain ability. Following on from our Test this will be the first of this seasons events. Obviously the more exposure to varying land and game throughout the closed season will undoubtedly prepare our dogs for the shooting season. If this trip is only half as productive as the last, then we will see plenty of rabbits. The day will consist of testing the dogs over varying cover, woods, water and gorsey/bracken banks etc. Initially for Spaniels but due to the terrain we will require a few Retrievers to pick up. All bookings must be in by 1st June 2009. Full details available from Nick on 07799 425063. My intention this year is to attempt an event each month leading upto the start of the Pheasant shooting season.
Results for The West Lancs Challenge Cup: Any Variety Gundog Working Test
1st - Tony Sloyan with (B) Emygan Lotus (Labrador Retriever) 2nd - John Farrell with (B) Milly (Labrador Retriever) 3rd - Debbie Smith with (B) Hytymes Belle at Blackdown (Flatcoat Retriever)
The day started with fine drizzle and a slight breeze, this soon passed us by and developed into a nice day, although the sun came out on several occasions the wind disappeared too. The 1st Test of the day was exactly that, a Test as not every dog out of the 12 who ran was able to find and pick thier marked retrieve.
The 2nd Test was a straight forward blind, out and back instruction, made to look so easy by the Retrievers, had some Spaniels wishing they had stayed at home.
The 3rd was a welcome break, a marked retrieve from water, every dog succeeded in retrieving the dummy on this Test, plus it broke the day as we had decided to take Elevenses at this point. However the threat of more rain put that idea away very quickly. No sooner had we decided to go through to the end, the sun reappeared.
The 4th Test, again a marked retrieve out of white grass and thistle proved a good one for the Spaniels as they all succeded in finding their dummies, but one or two of the Retrievers thought it a bit difficult, with one refusal and another blinking.
Test 5, a blind up to an old Partridge pen. This was very successful, in fact every dog succeeded in finding their dummies.
The final Test was down into a gully through some dense thistle and white grass. Again this was a great sight to see, especially with the Retrievers. A great launch from Kev Haworth (chief Dummy Chucker) put the dummy in the right spot every time for the final 12 retrieves. Afterwards everyone made their way back to the meeting point and vehicles for a well earned drink and sandwich. Giving the Judges time to add the scores together. The winner was outright but a run off was required for 2nd & 3rd between Deb Smith & John Farrell.
The run off was through a maize patch, up a slight enbankment and into some bracken at the edge of a wood. Ladies first as ever saw Deb Smith sending her Flatcoat bitch, straight out, but the dog seem to doubt her own nose when she got to the fall, and took, what felt like an age to pick the dummy. Next out was John Farrell's yellow Labrador. On sending her, she flew out like an arrow, straight to the dummy with total disregard for any briars or any other cover and straight back to hand to take 2nd place.
A brief recap from the Judges Karl Walker & Nick Powell and the awards began. The Head Steward Gary Heron and his team Nina Kurzweil and Kevin Haworth where awarded for officiating, then every competitor was awarded a Certificate for taking part in the 1st West Lancs Challenge Cup. Then it was time in reverse order, for the winners to step forward. Debbie Smith gained a 3rd, John Farrell a 2nd and finally Tony Sloyan was awarded 1st place with is Labrador Retriever (B).

Bryn Shoot New Date - 30th January 2009 has been arranged for Spaniels only for a final walk about of the season. This is a member only event and anyone interested should contact Nick via the online Contact form submitted via the website.
Spaniel Training - During the closed shooting season West Lancs Gundogs will be travelling to various locations for rabbiting with Spaniels, again this is a member only event and all enquiries should be to Nick in person. This is open to A/V Spaniels ONLY. (All dogs must be steady to flush/bolting rabbit)
Training Weekend 27th Nov through 30th Nov 2008 (Bryn Shoot) Once again we had a great weekend, our thanks to Roger Keenan, the Keeper and Deborah & Stuart of the Radnorshire Hotel for looking after us to the very best standard. Most handlers had great success, only one or two have come away with home work, nothing major, just a few tweeks here and there.
Due to the success of our recent training weekend at Bryn Shoot, we will be holding an additional weekend Thursday 27th November through to Sunday 30th November 2008. Again this is open to Members Only. Members wishing to book a place should do so without delay, the only difference being is that Pheasant's will be in season and more shooting will take place.
Away Days - Our next event this year will take place at Bryn Shoot from the 4th-7th Sept, this is a live game Training/Ability Test weekend. The importance of a steady dog should now be apparant to us all, especially those handlers who have been in the field prior. However, this "Simulated Shoot Day" will stamp home the importance when flushing game with a steady dog. Over the weekend we will see Rabbits, Pheasant, Partridge the odd Squirrel and even Deer. The training is an opportunity to sharpen up experienced dogs and a chance for the novice to see what is required. We will be dogging in, driving woods and even flushing pits and possibly some picking up. The whole weekend will be based on control in the field before the real thing comes along. We are looking forward to what is going to be an active, busy weekend for all dogs and handlers. This opportunity is open to members only.
For more information please contact www.westlancsgundogs.com complete an online enguiry form and we will respond as soon as possible to any enquiries made. Or alternatively contact Nick Powell via mobile telephone number 07799 425063.
