At West Lancs Gundogs we believe we have something unique, we are not your average dog training establishment. But, built on successful word of mouth, we cater for all gundog breeds, from Spaniels, (English, Welsh & Cockers) Retrievers (Labradors, Flatcoats & Goldens) through to the HPR's (GWP, GSP, Viszla and Bracco Italiano). By working on recognised methods, believed to be the basis of sound gundog training by good socialisation, we will start your puppy off to a great beginning. If you have an adolescent we can also cater for him too. For the experienced Handler we offer refresher training through-out the summer months by training several times during the evening's, thus enabling you to sharpen up a dog on rabbits or pheasant/partridge in a Supervised environment or just keep him fit for Working Test's or (GWT's). By taking part in activities through out the summer you will be keeping him at a standard albeit nothing compares to the real thing. But for those members who do not shoot or take part in shooting, scurries and test's will keep you busy. We also encourage young handlers to get involved too. In an age of electronic Gaming (XBox and Wii) and Computors, we have to keep our Sport from falling behind a modern world, in doing so we must make it attractive to the younger person by encouraging them more.
Nick explains "First and foremost we cater for working Gundogs and their handlers, our thinking is very simple, every Gundog that enters the working field should be to at least Test standard, by this I mean, it should Recall when asked, Stop and Retrieve. iIf you cannot achieve this then you need to go back to basics and start again. We actively encourage our Members to take part in all competitions, be it Scurries, Have a Go Fun Days or TGundog Working Tests, and for those dogs showing greater drive and control, we consider Trials. Even if the handler is not wishing to compete in any way whatsoever our training is in line with basic Test standard dogs. Some of our handlers have gone on to have taken up beating on shoot days and picking up. If we can promote RESPONSIBLE dog ownership of the varying breeds used within our sport, then we are achieving something, especially for the minor or rare breeds".
Nick was previously employed as a Gamekeeper for the 18th Earl of Derby in Knowsley, (purchasing his first Springer Spaniel bitch in 1984) he was at the estate for several years before moving on to a Single Handed post on a private Shooting Syndicate based in Rainford, St.Helens, adding to his Spaniel collection on the way. Nick is also experienced in the handling and training of German Shepherds too, especially when employed as a Single Handed Keeper and specifically within the Security Industry. Nick and West Lancs Gundogs can cater for other breeds based on a "one to one" system. Nick is also a supplier to both Merseyside & Greater Manchester Police Dog Section, for search dogs ie drugs and firearms detection. We have found over the years that dogs who fail as a Gundog, for either squeaking or barking etc go on to make excellent search dogs and take to the reward based training very easily.
